Episode 29: Allie Siarto on Entrepreneurship and a Fulfilling Career

Allie Siarto, Michigan photographerAfter my interview with my friend and fellow photographer, Mikkel from Mikkel Paige Photography, she came back and told me that she wanted to interview me for the podcast so that I could tell my own story. It was fun to be on the “other side” of the interview for this one and share how I went from running a multiple six figure marketing company with my husband to essentially quitting it all to focus on photography full time.

Sadly, the Get it Together Kit that I mentioned in the interview is no longer available. I’ll have to get Millie on the podcast soon to find out what she’s up to next.

A few topics from today’s show:

  • How the Chicago Photography Center got me interested in photography
  • Apprenticeships and mentorship
  • Why and when I decided to focus on photography full time

And in the spirit of the podcast, here’s a grab of some of my favorite photos.

Michael CourierA few topics from this show:

  • Michael’s advice for getting started as a performance + event photographer

“Even in the moments where I wake up and I’m still kind of struggling to either find the client or feel happy with some of my work that I’m doing, I would not trade it in for anything…I get to do what I love, so I know that the moments of struggle are still better than any other job I’ve ever had.”

“You will get it as long as you stick with it. It’s so easy for people to look at their work and look at other people’s work and be like, ‘I’m never going to get there. I’m just going to quit.’ I never really took that approach. I see other people’s work and I’m like, ‘I can be that one day if I keep with it.'”

“Don’t get frustrated with what other people are doing. Just keep doing it because you love it, and eventually you’ll get there.”
