Description

I’ll be honest—a lot of in person sales tactics have always felt manipulative to me. Photographers often use digital files as a carrot to get clients to spend more on prints, and they create false scarcity by forcing clients to make decisions during their sales consultation—the choice is between paying for high priced prints or never seeing the images again.

These photographers claim that in person sales are the only way we can truly serve our clients to the fullest while building profitable businesses, but the world has changed. Like it or not, our clients want to have digital images to share with friends and family around the world. They want to update their profile photos and share those images on Instagram and Facebook. They want their friends to tell them how great they look—and many simple will not hire a photographer who makes the digital files harder to access.

But here’s the good news—these clients also want prints! And they want to order those prints through you, because they still need your guidance and quality.

So here’s our chance to offer our clients the best of both worlds. We can price ourselves for profitability while giving clients the digital images they want and also make extra profit through print sales.

What if we could give our clients a guide to help them prep for their sessions AND inspire them to style prints into their homes with our gorgeous products? And all of this can happen without spending all of those extra hours doing in person sales. A full service in person sales client might take five hours to serve (prep meeting, session, editing, sales consultation), and we’re still at risk of getting low sales from that session. With the Simple Product Sales System, we have guaranteed income from every session, it takes less time (I can block two to three sessions in one evening), and we’re still guiding our clients toward products that allow them to display the photos in their home.

Let’s Look at the Math.

Let’s say I average $1,500 per session as an in person sales photographer (when I did in person sales in a low cost of living area in the Midwest, my range was roughly $600-$1,200 per sale, but some didn’t spend anything above the base fee).

  • $1,500 – $500 (cost of goods sold) = $1,000
  • $1,000/5 hours = $200 per hour (two evenings: prep meeting, photograph the session, edit, sales consultation, product ordering, and delivery)

Not bad, right? This also assumes I shoot outdoors, and I don’t pay any overhead for a studio.

Now let’s look at the Simple Product Sales Method where I can schedule a few sessions back-to-back in one evening.

  • $1,150/4.5 hours = $255 per hour (one evening: automate most of the prep through prep guides, photograph the sessions, edit, image delivery)

This is before I offer any printed products. Now if I sell $100 in drop-shipped prints for each session, I’m making approximately $270 per hour for my work after the cost of goods sold, and I get an extra evening to either hang out at home or shoot more sessions (in my own experience, product sales have ranged from $0 to $6,000 per client, but full disclosure: $6,000 sales are not typical). And I can easily bring in more clients per month because clients will return to me year after year—versus the big ticket in person sales clients who don’t want to spend this amount every single year (nor do they have the wall space to support annual photo sessions). This means I also save time on marketing to chase down new clients each year.

I’ve been using this system in my own company for years to prepare my clients for photo sessions and guide them through the best way to design products into their homes. Many of my clients return every single year and refer me to their friends, so marketing gets easier every year.
