Episode 106: Selling and Producing Albums for Your Photography Clients

selling and producing albums for your photography clientsI’ve gotten a few questions about albums over on Instagram, so I’m dedicating this week’s episode to all things albums. Here’s what I’m covering:

  • Pricing your albums
  • What to do if your albums aren’t selling
  • The album mistakes I’ve made that you can learn from
  • How to easily design albums (including a comparison of different album software options)
  • How to manage the design with your clients to make sure you get your edits back from clients quickly

  1. Great show Allie! 🙂 I feel like I’ve made every mistake with wedding albums too – and it continues to be a work in progress!! I moved to predesigning albums for all the reasons you mentioned, and I give 3 rounds of changes. The overall turnaround on changes takes so long! I love the idea of a 30 day time limit. And I think I’ll have that replace the “rounds” of changes, and limit it to two rounds included. Have you ever had to actually order the album as is? Just curious. 🙂 I tend to design a few extra spreads as I go through, as I like the images to have some room. Then my clients have an option to keep those pages and upgrade. I’m curious how you would handle if you then ended up having to order the album as is. Would you remove the extra pages (say it was a 24 page included album, but you had designed 30 pages) before ordering? Or do you find that you actually haven’t had to go that route, as clients will complete in time for the deadline? Would love your thoughts! Thanks!!

    • I’ve never actually had to order the album as is, but I had one situation where I did extend the deadline because the couple moved across the country during that 30 days, and it was understandably tough for them to get everything done in time. The key is to send reminders as they get close, and they’ll get it done 🙂

If I over design, I usually give them the option to add the extra spreads at 20% off, and they’ll make that decision within the 30 days – so again, with reminders, I’ve fortunately never had to make that call for them.
